Growing up in a Major League Baseball clubhouse with his dad, Bert Blyleven (MLB Hall of Fame member, class 2011), Coach Todd traveled the country learning the game of baseball from some of the greatest players, coaches, and front office personnel in the business. Coach Todd’s days were filled with playing around on big league fields, shagging balls during batting practice, shining shoes in the clubhouse, and being the bat boy for teams like the 1979 World Series Pittsburgh Pirates, and the 1987 World Series Minnesota Twins.
“I remember having one of my first hitting lessons with the great Willie Stargell, taking ground balls next to guys like Cal Ripken and Ozzie Smith, working on fly balls with the legendary Kirby Puckett, and pitching not only next to my dad, but with guys like Nolan Ryan, Frank Viola, and Jim Abbott. I always appreciated the hard work, and sacrifices these players made to be the best the game ever produced. I learned so many life lessons from working with and playing the game of baseball with these great athletes and coaches in the first 20+ years of my life, and I am so fortunate to be able to pass those teachings down to today’s athlete to help them become the player they aspire to be”.
As a player in High School and College, Coach Todd’s baseball accolades ranged from All-League, All-State, All-Conference, to All-American. Coach Todd played professionally for 7+ seasons in the Angels, Pirates, and Brewers organizations where he learned quickly not only how to win, but how to deal with losing as a player.
“There is nothing like the feeling of putting that professional uniform on for the first time, standing in front of that locker with your name on it, and getting ready to step on the field for the first time as a Professional player. Man, what a day that was”.
After playing, Coach Todd was hired as an MLB Scouting Supervisor, and scouted for over 8 years with the Angels and Rockies organizations. “I was so fortunate to have scouted thousands of top amateur High School and College players in my journeys, and signed over 26 players to MLB contracts, one being MLB Star, Troy Tulowitzki. Learning the inner workings of MLB Baseball Operations, Scouting, and Player Development was truly an amazing experience.”
During the off season of his playing and scouting days, Coach Todd worked with countless baseball prospects from the pro to youth amateur player.
“Scouting taught me how to break a player down to the inches of athletic movements and baseball actions and growing up learning from so many greats of the game, taught me how to build him back up with proper teachings and fundamentals to allow that player to be the best they can be. I love to coach baseball, and love to give players a chance to be better than I ever dreamed possible.”
